The Australian Open draw has been released. Venus and Serena Williams are on opposite ends of the draw – Woo hoo!
Serena is the top seed, however, she does face a tough first round match against Camilla Giorgi, ranked 35th in the world. Serena’s road to the finals could include a 4th round match against good friend Caroline Wozniacki, a quarterfinal match-up against Maria Sharapova, a semifinal match against Agnieszka Radwanska or Petra Kvitova, and a potential final against sister Venus or Simona Halep.
Venus Williams is the 8th seed at this tournament. She is drawn to face Johanna Konta (49th) in the first round. Venus could face Karolina Pliskova in the 4th round, Simona Halep in the quarterfinals, Angelique Kerber or Garbine Muguruza in the semifinal, and Serena in the final.
Serena is looking to win her seventh Australian Open title, and 22nd grand slam title, overall (which would tie Steffi Graf). Many are questioning Serena’s health and “readiness” after withdrawing from the Hopman Cup with a knee injury. Serena has stated, however, that she has been practicing everyday and that her knee is feeling good. Let’s remember that Serena did not do well at last year’s Hopman Cup to start the year, causing many doubters, and Serena went on to win three slams (including the Australian Open).
Venus Williams, surprisingly, has yet to win a slam down under. She is looking to win her first Australian Open, and eighth slam singles title.
The Australian Open begins on January 18th (Sunday evening in the United States).
