Venus Williams lost her opening round match to Johanna Konta of Great Britain, 6:4, 6:2. At #47 in the world, it was already predicted to be a difficult match for Venus, who played with a bandage on her thigh, as well as on her arm.
It is never easy to see one of the sisters lose so early in a grand slam, and in Venus’ case, we all are hoping for her to stay healthy and do well. After her resurgence in 2015, jumping to #8 in the world, there was a lot of hope for the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, it has been a slow start to 2016 for Venus, as she also lost the first round in Auckland, a tournament in which she was the defending champion.
Venus declined a post-match press conference, so we will have to wait to hear how she is feeling. What I do know, is that being an Olympic year, Venus has her sights set on making the Olympic team with Serena again. Here is to praying for good health for Venus the remainder of the year.
